According to Goal, former Real Madrid Castilla player Alex Fernandez revealed in a podcast that Neymar had a trial with Real Madrid for several weeks before deciding to return to Brazil.
Fernandez, who currently plays for UAE club Dibba Al-Hisn, once played for Castilla alongside Morata, Carvajal, and Saravia. He discussed Neymar's trial experience at Real Madrid during an appearance on the podcast "El After de Post United."
Fernandez said: "If I told you, you wouldn't believe it. Neymar came and did physical tests with us. Pablo Saravia, Dani Carvajal, and others were all there at the time. He stayed here for two or three weeks."
He added: "At that time, he wasn't the world-class star everyone knows today, but you could already see the sparks of his talent."
Fernandez revealed that Neymar was originally supposed to join the team for an international competition, but after three weeks, the team was informed that Neymar had decided to stay in Brazil.
He stated: "He was supposed to go with us to an international competition. Three weeks later, we were told: 'No, no, he decided to stay in Brazil.' Of course, at that age, we wouldn't question the reasons."
Fernandez also said that this was not a decision by Real Madrid's management. Real Madrid highly valued Neymar at the time, but Neymar himself and those around him felt it was too early, so he decided to return to Brazil.
He added: "I don't know exactly what happened, but he said it was all too soon. I remember Real Madrid wanted him, but the young man decided to go back to Brazil."
Speaking about that generation of players, Fernandez said: "The best player of that era was Pablo Saravia. Even with Neymar coming, he was the one who could make a difference in any situation."
