Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina says he\'s asked coach Rino Gattuso to stay on after their World Cup playoff defeat last night.

With Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni sent off before halftime, Italy and Bosnia played out a 1-1 draw through to extra-time before the hosts won the shootout 4-1 on Tuesday night. It means Italy will now miss a third consecutive World Cup.

Gravina spoke to the press afterwards and stated: "The mood is quite clear, especially given how this result came about. Allow me to congratulate the lads; they've shown incredible growth in recent months.

"Many of you haven't been able to appreciate the atmosphere and the spirit these past few months. We wanted to give our fans something to cheer about, and I want to congratulate Rino Gattuso.

"He's a great coach; I asked him and (team manager Gigi) Buffon to stay on as coaches for these lads. You missed a moment of great harmony in the locker room. You all saw the match. There's little to comment on; the coach called them heroic. I understand there are various assessments to be made."

Of his own position, Gravina said: "For the political side, there is a forum designated to make assessments, namely the Federal Council.

"I have already decided to convene it for next week, and there will be internal assessments. I understand the call for resignations at any moment, but there is a suitable forum for making assessments."
