Como confirmed last week that Diao picked up “a low grade injury to the biceps femoris in his left thigh” which was yet another injury set back for the forward who has spent little time on the pitch over the past year.
The 20-year-old already missed the last five games of 2024-25 because of a foot injury. Now, as players prepare for AFCON to begin next month, Fabregas has stated that Diao should not feature for Senegal.
"I don't want to send him to the African Cup of Nations? For me it's illogical," he said. "He's been out for seven months, he's played three games, now he's going to the national team, he'll get injured and be out again.
“Then maybe he'll go back to Senegal. In the player's mind, you have to do things right. For me, it doesn't make sense. They won't care, but we want what's best for the player. He shouldn't go.
“He went to training camp with Senegal with a minor adductor problem and did two training sessions. Then he got injured and came back here. We'll try to get him back with Inter, but it's more likely that we'll have him back with Roma."
Como currently stand eighth in the Serie A table after 11 games, having lost just one match so far. Fabregas has missed Diao after he scored 8 goals in just 15 games last season and won’t want to risk causing anymore damage to the winger who has become a key feature of the medical room.

Afcon should be rescheduled to off season, parent clubs are struggling with mid season competition and injuries.

Am an African to the core but it's best we reschedule this Afcon tournament, many clubs don't sign African players cos of the clash with various football league games.Euro and Copa America are all played during off season.

i stand to be corrected though, the clubs in Europe goes on a break when it’s Euro’s but not when it’s AFCON or any other tournament, how’s that fair? 😏 they’re talking because we’re having the players they need and since they can’t go on this break, they torment ours. wise up man, stop being a clown 🤡

Let's look at it this way............has any coach ever discussed Fabregas injury situation publicly throughout his playing career with his kind of analysis.....? Besides, has any of those coaches dare suggest that he boycotts the Spanish national team to concentrate on club commitments. This overbearing behavior of some of these European coaches on our African players any time Afcon beckons is nauseating, retrogressive, reprehensible and an affront to the right, dignity and professionalism of our players for the simple reason that they want to represent their countries. Unfortunately this scenario cannot and would never be countenanced by any European country. But in all fairness, I think it's about time the CAF also reviews its calendar to align with the European leagues such that such club v country hegemony does not rob the club from making good use of their players as well the Afcon of the excitement that comes with it. After all the clubs single handedly takes care of the players welfare..........in terms of their remuneration, health status and fitness levels.
