Liverpool are expected to be active in the January transfer window as a result of Gomez’s injury.
The centre-back was withdrawn from England duty this week after going down with a knee injury off the ball.
He will likely miss a large portion of the rest of the season, having had surgery on his knee to repair a torn tendon on Thursday.
Gomez will now join Virgil van Dijk in the treatment room, giving Jurgen Klopp a severe issue at the back.
Van Dijk is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the current campaign after suffering an ACL injury and having surgery on his knee.
To make matters worse, Fabinho is still recovering from a hamstring injury and is unlikely to return anytime soon. For that reason, a centre-back will likely be at the top of Klopp’s shopping list for January.
Liverpool have never been a club to overspend for the sake of it, but were believed to be eager to reinforce the defence during the summer.
Before Gomez’s injury, it was expected they would wait until next summer before signing a new centre-back.
But now, they have been tipped to go after a new defender as soon as possible, meaning a January spending spree could well be on.
Here are some players Liverpool have been linked with and could move to sign during the winter window.
Dayot Upamecano
Liverpool fans will be hoping the club reignites their interest in RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, having reportedly looked at him during the summer.
The defender will be a target for Manchester United next summer, so the Reds could opt to pounce in the winter window in order to beat them to the punch.
He is valued highly, and could cost a fee in the region of £50million.
Ozan Kabak
A cheaper option could be Ozan Kabak, as reports in Germany suggest the Schalke defender has been put up for sale for £22m.
The defender is believed to be highly regarded by Klopp, but is still young and fairly inexperienced.
Ben White
The Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back seems to be an unlikely target for Liverpool.
The defender is valued at around £50m by the Seagulls, and is a key part of Graeme Potter’s side.
If Liverpool were to prize away the 23-year-old away from the Amex, that deal would more likely come next summer.
Outgoings will likely be scarce during January, as they were active in offloading players during the summer. However, there could still be some players to depart, with a couple listed here.
Divock Origi
The emergence of new signing Diogo Jota has pushed Origi further down the pecking order at Anfield.
He seems unlikely to play much going forward, and has only made three appearances across all competitions this season – none of which came in the Premier League.
Xherdan Shaqiri
Shaqiri seems to have adopted a bench player role this season, and has regained Klopp’s trust in recent weeks.
During the summer it seemed inevitable that he would depart, but having worked his way back into the frame it is now unlikely he will leave before next season at the earliest.

Rather than buying someone they should trust on williams and philips to secure there places as CB in the first team as this is probably the best opportunity for them.
