Barcelona's 'Messi, ter Stegen, de Jong, Fati and Puig the only players safe from summer overhaul'

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is only one of five players that the club consider unavailable for transfer this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The Catalan giants are preparing for an unprecedented summer overhaul following their humiliating Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich in Lisbon on Friday.

Defender Gerard Pique stated after Barcelona's 8-2 defeat to the Bundesliga champions that drastic changes were needed, and now a mass exodus is planned after the rout highlighted deep-rooted issues at the Nou Camp.

And according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the only players that are guaranteed a Camp Nou stay are Messi, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong and recent La Masia graduates Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig.

Moreover, the report adds that Luis Suarez could be among the potential high-profile exits from LaLiga's runners-up, along with left-back Jordi Alba.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan striker has one season left on his contract but has a clause which automatically triggers a year extension if he plays 60 per cent of Barca's games over the course of the next campaign.

It is said the Barcelona hierarchy would look to cover Suarez's departure by signing Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, providing there are the funds to do so.

Meanwhile, the club believe Spain international Alba's performance levels are now not of a high enough standard to be a starter, but with a contract until 2024 which includes a release clause of £452million (€500m), his departure would have to be negotiated.

The club would also like to get France internationals Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembele off the wage bill due to the duo's disappointing behaviour and the former's well-documented knee injury struggles.

Ivan Rakitic has also been pushed to leave but former club Sevilla are playing hardball over paying a fee for the Croatian, and while the Catalan outfit see a place for Antoine Griezmann at the Camp Nou, they will not stand in his way if a suitable offer arrives.

Changes are also expected to be made in the coaching department, with Barcelona chiefs having reportedly already decided to relieve boss Quique Setien of his duties after his failure to win the Champions League or LaLiga.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is said to be the favourite to take over from Setien, but reports have since emerged that senior players and board members are against his appointment due to his links to Catalan rivals Espanyol.

Reports have also suggested that Messi has threatened to quit if urgent action is not taken, while Pique offered to leave for good on Friday if the club believed it was in their best interests.
