Football's lawmakers have insisted VAR is here to stay and that there would be 'uproar' if the controversial technology was scrapped despite dividing opinion.
The introduction of referees checking their pitchside monitors has failed to assuage frustration from supporters, players and coaches alike over how VAR is used and the interpretation of a series of questionable rules.
David Elleray, the technical director of IFAB, and Lukas Brud, the secretary at the same organisation, spoke to The Times about the future of VAR and defended its much-maligned track record.
The spate in bizarre handball calls and incidents across the pitch that VAR has pounced on has resulted in an unsightly clamour to axe the system again this season, just two years after its introduction.
Former official Elleray and Brud believe the frustration directed at VAR is often misplaced, however, and have pointed to a number of its successes so far.
'I think if there was no VAR in the future there would be uproar,' Elleray said. 'Pre-pandemic, more than 100 countries and competitions were using it or planning to use it, believing the benefits outweigh everything else.
'Ultimately the game is fairer. You won't have a major competition decided by an error, a penalty that should not be awarded, a goal scored with a hand.
'Player behaviour has improved significantly, much less mobbing of referees. There are some very strong figures on that reduction. Simulation is down.
'Some would say VAR broadly has helped to clean up football. There are far fewer red cards for off the ball [incidents], more bad tackles punished, more penalties given - perhaps some a bit harsh.'
VAR was firmly placed under the spotlight again after Aston Villa were denied a stoppage time penalty in their loss to West Ham last week.
Ollie Watkins was hauled back on the edge of the box before netting an apparent leveller, although the check from the officials focused on the striker straying offside, as a result of the push, rather than any potential spot-kick.
The incident, the latest in an ever-increasing series that has mired VAR in mutiny, has sparked fresh uproar from players and pundits - with the interpretation of the sport's guidelines now particularly under fire.
When questioned over the mounting dismay, Elleray refused to comment on any specific moments but criticised the 'rigidness' of some officials.
He added: 'Some leagues around the world, without naming them, the referees are being too rigid and inflexible. This is not what football wants or the law intended.'

VAR is good and must stay. There must be hard and fast rules regarding VAR for consistency to reign. Look at Cricket , a similar situation is there and is almost 💯

The is no perfect system, even a circle it either big or small or not perfectly round at some points, so people only love VAR when it's used in their favor but are heart broken when used against them. VAR is here to stay and it's interpretation lies with referee who are sometimes bias toward other clubs

Just say referees in the UK especially England are too rigid and making the technology fail. The interpretation is very poor for us fans to enjoy the game that we love so much. Football thrived without VAR for many years so why should we suffer now? These are the things you need to work on. Firmino goal was not given just because the whole ball couldn't cross the line despite 97.9 percent crossing it and these are the issues VAR should have enhanced because the eye of the referee couldn't. For me VAR should have only intervened on goal line, offside, possible red or yellow card and not marginal offsides which the ref has missed. These are the things that made us love the game and kept us talking the whole week until the next games. We accept human errors and not technology errors. These days we talk about VAR more than we talk about players and the game itself which is killing the game completely. Let those with power also ban those officials who target certain teams while overlooking other teams for similar offenses.
if the ball didn't fully cross the line it isn't a goal though. the rest of it i agree with! offsides are stupid with armpits being offside and stuff it should be off where your footing is if you ask me. if a keeper jumped and caught the ball landed behind the line but its not a goal then why should that be the same for somebodies head being offside or an armpit or even an ass cheek for that matter 😂😂 The rules need to be improved before we warm to var thats the bigger issue not var.

VAR is progress but the management is the problem..I think the official should run the game and also give the team the option for one or two review like in cricket it’s a suggestion

How can VAR make penalty decisions
VAR assist. Ref also has an option to go n check and then say if it's a Penalty or not. VAR helps you the acces of replays. The decision is made by refs finally.

Bro VAR is technology. It is better Than it than without. More unfair decision could be there if VaR is not there. You could say Penalty are soft but those are rules which are on discretion on referees anyways. Atleast refs get a chance to see replays to make better decisions

Bro VaR is good. It's a technology. Without VaR you would have more bad decision than with it. Var gives you acces to replays to make decisions. So yes marginal calls are there but without it you would have howlers

I can see that Man U fans are not against it because it’s favoring u especially giving u penalties and also not awarding penalties for other teams against your team, time will come wen u all will cry 😢 , we are all here waiting for that day to come” even if the VAR rules change or not, Liverpool are retaining the Title this season

We Don't want VAR axed all we're asking is for more credibility in terms of officiating the game by the refereeing officials , countless of times it has shown obvious favoritism and the main aim for it has been tainted
Favouritism without VAR is easier. Atleast VaR provides more accurate decision than only refs.

Why is VAR bad? I mean it's so accurate for offsides. Marginal but atleast it's correct. Without VaR you could have so many howlers.

If there were VAR, Ferguson wouldn't have won 13 EPL titles. VAR is a welcome development but has to improve.

IMO in general VAR is 80% accurate and 20% innaccurate.... So the benefits are far more than the cons. Rhe onlybthing needed ia to continue reviewing and improving over time. But to be fair VAR will never be 100% correct because it's just impossible.

I think var should be axed because it forces the referees to be decisive. The real time aspect and randomness of a referee is better than ruling someone offside by less than an inch. Yes, there will be missed calls, but the sport has existed for decades without it and been perfectly fine.

When will people stop blaming the technology? VAR is just a tool. Its the people who uses it ruins it. The same VAR has been in cricket for years giving decisions within seconds and has absolute confidence of cricket players and fans.

even if it's axed the referees will make mistakes so what's the difference .. they just need to work on its consistency and use ..so that it will be fairly used in all matches but then referees will always be referees and the way they see things will be different cos they have different perceptions..

the problem with VAR is that it was supposed to aid REFEREES DECISIONS not make the decisions for them, the REFEREES should make all the decisions, if they make a mistake VAR should advise them to review the pitch side monitor to review their decisions, but the REFEREES should always make the final decision. unfortunately this is not happening VAR is running and ruining the game, what is the point of REFEREES if they have no real responsibility. there are always incidents in every game that can give the advantage to a favoured team and it certainly looks to me that VAR and the relevant football associations and football officials are using VAR to manipulate the outcome of the leagues and champions league cup competitions...🤬 C.T.I.D
