Former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius targets Klopp reunion with Germany

Loris Karius believes he "could become a candidate" for the Germany squad following Jurgen Klopp's appointment as head coach.

Klopp was announced as the national team's new boss on Friday, signing a four-year deal as he plans to take charge of the side at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.

The 59-year-old has overseen 1,080 matches across his managerial career, coaching Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, winning 588 of those (D256 L236).

His 431 in charge of Liverpool is the third-most by a manager in the club's history (behind Bill Shankly's 799 and Bob Paisley's 523), while he has won the seventh-most points amongst Premier League managers in history (705), but boasts the third-best points-per-game average (2.11).

During his time with the Reds, he signed Karius from Mainz for €6.2m (£5.3m).

The goalkeeper made 49 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, but a error-strewn performance in the 2018 Champions League, when Real Madrid ran out 3-1 winners, cost Karius his place in the team.

The 33-year-old was at fault for Madrid's first and third goals, and Alisson Becker subsequently joined Liverpool in the following transfer window.

However, after helping Schalke return to the Bundesliga last season, Karius believes he could reunite with Klopp in the national team.

"I don't know what plans [Klopp] has. But I'm playing for Schalke now, and my situation isn't bad at all," Karius said in an interview with the German newspaper WAZ.

"If I perform at a high level, I could become a candidate."

Klopp's first game as Germany boss comes against the Netherlands in the Nations League on September 24.

They will also face Greece and Serbia during the extended international break.
