A former Liverpool winger is 'set to be named as the new manager of Bordeaux' just 81 days after accepting his current job in Slovenia.

The Spanish international joined the Reds in 2008, scoring five goals and nine assists in 56 appearances.

However, his time was cut short in 2010 after he was suspended by then manager Rafa Benitez for criticising him.

The suspected managerial appointment comes for Bordeaux as they sit 13th in Ligue 2 after suffering four defeats in their first ten matches of the season.

Now, fans of the French team will be hoping Albert Riera - who also played for Olympiacos, Galatasaray, Watford and Udinese - can turn their club's fortunes around.

According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal has been agreed in principle for Riera to join Bordeaux.

The transfer expert tweeted: 'Albert Riera set to be appointed as new head coach at Bordeaux. Deal has been agreed in principle.

'Formal steps to follow and contract being prepared for former LFC player to join Bordeaux as manager.'

The Spanish international, who made 16 appearances for his country, is currently the manager of Slovenian PrvaLiga club Celje.

He led them to the Slovenian PrvaLiga title and cup for a double in his first season last year.

Riera was suspended by Liverpool in 2010 after he made comments to the Spanish press regarding his first team opportunities and was subsequently transfer listed.
