Former Marseille president Pablo Longoria set for River Plate role

Former Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria has only been out of work, but he is now set to make a return, as per a report from L’Équipe.

Longoria’s exit from Marseille was confirmed back in March. It was a protracted exit, one triggered by Roberto De Zerbi’s exit as manager a few weeks earlier. In that time, sporting director Medhi Benatia also briefly left the club before returning. Upon his return, he was granted more power at the expense of Longoria, who was put onto institutional duties.

L’Équipe understands that Longoria has been in talks with Argentine side River Plate for several weeks and that an agreement between the Spaniard and the club has now been found. He is expected to sign his contract in the coming hours, with Longoria already on site in Buenos Aires.

His entourage, speaking to L’Équipe, said that there was the option to remain in Europe but that making the move to River Plate, where he will become sporting director, is a “decision from the heart”.
