Dominic Matteo is looking bright and in 'incredible form' following recent surgery to remove a brain tumour, a close friend has revealed.

Former Liverpool and Leeds defender Matteo was rushed to hospital last week, and was released from intensive care to receive further treatment.

The first updates are now coming in on the 45-year-old, with close friend Simon Ross taking to social media to give fans the latest news on the situation after speaking with Matteo via a video call from hospital.

'Just had a FaceTime call from him, he was on incredible form, chatting, talking football, joking and very positive,' wrote Ross.

'Immensely great full to all the hospital staff at the LGI, amazing recovery,' he added.

Earlier, the radio show host had informed concerned fans that Matteo had 'responded brilliantly to surgery' and added that 'Dom is the best friend you could wish for.'

The news of Matteo's illness had become public knowledge after former club Liverpool issued a statement.

'The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Dom, his family and friends and we will be offering our support to them throughout this difficult time,' said the Merseyside club.

'A popular member of the Liverpool side in the 1990s and a regular pundit and commentator on LFCTV in recent years, Matteo made his debut for the Reds in October 1993.

'We wish Dom a full and speedy recovery and will offer any support we can to his wife and family.'
