Match Report
Kylian Mbappe upstaged Lionel Messi as France recorded a 4-3 win over Argentina in a topsy-turvy last-16 clash to open the knockout stages at the World Cup.
Teenager Mbappe was in devastating form in the heavyweight clash, scoring two second-half goals to bring Argentina's Russia 2018 campaign to an end in Kazan.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward's surging 70-yard burst also led to the opening goal after 13 minutes, Antoine Griezmann slotting home from the penalty spot after Mbappe had been hauled down by Marcos Rojo in the area.
Yet Argentina turned the game around, Angel Di Maria's stunning long-range strike before the break followed by Gabriel Mercado's fortuitous effort early in the second half.
However, Benjamin Pavard scored a stunning equaliser in the 57th minute before Mbappe took centre stage with a quick-fire brace, securing Didier Deschamps' side a place in the quarter-finals, where they will play either Uruguay or Portugal.
Messi – whose international future will be a burning question in the aftermath of the defeat - did set up a late header for Sergio Aguero but it was not enough to save Argentina, with the beaten finalists from 2014 slipping out of this year’s tournament.

Messi missed a golden chance today at 86th minute but he also assisted twice in the three goal. Argentina at least played better than the group stage matches but were outshine by france which made effective use of opportunities. The better team won today but Argentina did not played that bad considering her recent form

It's been 20 years, saw Gabriel Batistuta & Javier Zanetti lose & now Messi. Hard to take this one.. ..... One word to say the way Argentina was playing this world cup they dnt deserve to be in top 8, meanwhile Messi is a living legend & a hero irrespective of the result........... No one will ever say he assisted those 2 goals of Argentina out of 3. No one will ever say Argentina came thus far only because of him. How can a player score when he is surrounded by 2-3 players all the time if not more than that? How can a player score when his teammates hardly passes him the ball when he needs it? Other teams know who Lionel Messi is and they know they are up against the best of all time and that’s why they give their best against him.
