France's poor Euro 2020 shatters Barcelona's transfer dreams

As France's Euro 2020 came to a disappointingly early finish, so too were Barcelona's transfer ambitions frustrated.

The Catalan club are short of funds and have little room for manoeuvre this summer, unless they can offload some assets. They had hoped that impressive displays at the European Championship might raise the value of Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Clement Lenglet, while also attracting interest.

However, the Euros haven't gone according to plan for Les Bleus or the Blaugrana, with Switzerland eliminating France and doing no favours to Barcelona's players' stock.

Dembele's injury

Dembele's case is particularly unfortunate, with the winger injured in the group stage after a decent club season and he now faces a four-month setback.

The 24-year-old was a firm part of Ronald Koeman's plans until he stalled on a contract renewal, causing the club to decide he would be put up for sale if he didn't sign.

Now, though, an exit this summer looks impossible and the club will redouble their attempts to convince him to put pen to paper on a new deal to avoid the possibility of him leaving for nothing next year.

Griezmann's role

Barcelona are not actively shopping the forward, but they are prepared to listen to offers for the former Atletico Madrid man who hasn't quite lived up to expectations at the Camp Nou.

His high salary and the money still owed on his transfer fee are both a motivation to sell and a hinderance to his sale.

Griezmann hasn't had a poor Euro 2020, but he also hasn't stood out, with Karim Benzema being the most impressive member of France's all-star attacking trident.

Lenglet's year

It has been a disappointing season for Lenglet for club and country. His errors in the domestic campaign have been compounded by a weak showing at Euro 2020, especially against Switzerland when he was replaced at half time.

Barcelona have six first-team defenders on their books and are potentially in the market for another, meaning at least one must leave.

It is assumed that Samuel Umtiti will be heading for the door and the club had hoped that a solid tournament with France would bring offers for Lenglet too.

They will now find it harder to shift the 26-year-old and the Blaugrana hierarchy will be lamenting France's early exit almost as much as French supporters.
