Frank delighted with Spurs' mentality in 'best performance of the season'

Thomas Frank labelled Tottenham’s performance in their 2-2 draw against Brighton as their best of the season.

Spurs went 2-0 down at the Amex Stadium before they rescued a point thanks to a strike from Richarlison and an own goal from Jan Paul van Hecke.

It was the first time Spurs avoided defeat in an away league game in which they trailed by two or more goals since December 2022 (2-2 at Brentford), having lost each of their previous 15 such matches.

And Frank felt his team would have been worthy victors.

“I thought we looked extremely strong. I am very happy with the overall performance. It was potentially our best performance of the season,” Frank told Sky Sports.

“We dominated more or less throughout the game and created enough chances. We maybe lacked enough to create three or four big chances but the amount of crosses we were putting in. For me if there should have been a winner it should have been us.

“What I loved from the players was the mentality. This group came here last year, went 2-0 up and then lost 3-2, now we are 2-0 down and get to 2-2, and we are closer to the three points.

“The physicality from the players was good. We played midweek and then to go again today just shows that they are fit and they are strong.”

Brighton, meanwhile, failed to win a Premier League home game in which they led by two or more goals for just a third time (also a 2-2 draw with Southampton in April 2022 and a 2-2 draw with Wolves in October 2024).

Van Hecke’s moment of misfortune marked their 20th own goal since the start of their first Premier League season in 2017-18. The Seagulls have conceded more own goals than any other side in the division in that time.

Despite taking some positives, Fabian Hurzeler believes his side should have been more “ruthless”.

He told Sky Sports: "In the moments that we conceded the goals, the timing was bad. I think how we conceded the goals was quite unlucky.

“Overall I was pleased with the performance. We created chances, had quite a few good transition moments, especially in the second half and we could finish the game earlier. In the end there were a lot of unlucky things.

“We have to be more ruthless sometimes. Be more stable in some moments. But we have to see the positives.

“We saw two teams with a lot of energy and intensity so overall it was an even game. In the end we controlled it, we gave away the goals too easy but the energy and intensity was good, so I was pleased.”
