Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta has some big choices to make ahead of the Community Shield final with the Gunners needing to trim their squad.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal squad that will face Manchester City could be as close to full fitness as he has had all summer. After a plague of first-team injuries meant that Folarin Balogun, Reiss Nelson and Oleksandr Zinchenko all miss a big chunk of their preparations.

He played 11 minutes of low-key football, saying afterwards: "Fitness is good, I feel much better. I would love to be ready for tomorrow but the manager is going to decide. "I need to get back into my best version before the season."

One back for Arteta but one out as key winger Bukayo Saka could miss another game with illness. He didn't play in the Emirates Cup clash with Monaco due to being unwell. "Yeah, Bukayo is much better, he trained today," Arteta said before the game on Sunday.

"I don’t expect anybody else to not play." That is a big boost for the group after Declan Rice had also missed some pre-season action and Nelson was sent home from America with a foot laceration early on in the tour.

They are a mixture of injury doubts and surplus to requirements with Arteta opening up on the size of his squad. "Well, we’re in the process [of reducing the numbers]. We’re working on a few things. We have to make a few decisions. There’s still time to do that.

"We’re very happy with the squad we have that’s for sure. As well we have to make sure we can share the minutes around the team to have a healthy competition in the squad and we’re working on that."

"We had to do a little procedure there but unfortunately, it was the best thing to do and the quicker the better. We made that decision. I’m sure he will be back soon and very fit."

Although it is a boost to have the majority of the squad back in contention to play at Wembley for the Community Shield, Arteta will be restricted with a 20-man squad needed for the game. That is 14 players less than the club's official website has listed currently, even if some of those aren't yet available.

Goalkeepers: Aaron Ramsdale, Matt Turner, Runar Alex Runarsson, Karl Hein
