Furious PSG star storms off pitch and refuses to accept award after Villa win

Paris Saint-Germain progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League after getting the better of Aston Villa but they were forced to withstand a spirited comeback

Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele didn't react to kindly to being presented with the man of the match award after his team squeezed past Aston Villa in the Champions League quarter-finals. The winger, who saw a goal disallowed for offside, played his part as PSG lost 3-2 on the night but progressed 5-4 on aggregate.

In footage shared on social media, Dembele can be seen ignoring a staff member who attempts to present him with the award, though he later posed for a photo with it in his hands. Speaking after the game, the French international pointed to his frustration with the second-half performance which almost cost his team a spot in the semi-finals.

"We thought we were too good. At 2-1, we thought we were already qualified and that it was over," Dembele said, as translated by Goal. "That's how the Champions League goes. You face teams whose supporters are white-hot and they can turn the game on its head."

After Nuno Mendes added late gloss to their first leg win, PSG struck twice in the opening half-hour at Villa Park. Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring after capitalising on a spill from Emi Martinez, with fellow full-back Mendes scoring the second after another quick break.

Youri Tielemans pulled one back before half-time, but the hosts still needed three more. They got two in quick succession, with John McGinn and Ezri Konsa on target, and PSG needed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to be on fine form to protect their advantage.

"Obvious disappointment but I am proud of my team-mates, proud of the club," Villa scorer McGinn said after the match. "We have come a long way. We were so, so close tonight.

"We just fell a little bit short. We had chances to take the game to extra-time but we've got to be proud about the way we come back against one of the best teams in the world, to fight to the end."

PSG boss Luis Enrique was impressed by the atmosphere at Villa Park, but argued his team deserved to progress over the two legs. The Ligue 1 champions will meet Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with Arsenal holding a 3-0 advantage after the first leg in London.

"We cannot forget, this is the Champions League and the other team has a lot of quality," the manager told Amazon Prime. "Aston Villa played with a lot of intensity. The whole two matches, we deserved to win.

"The second year in a row in the semi-finals and we want to go into the next phase. I think have the best squad in the world, not only the best goalkeeper. You have a lot of quality players at a club like PSG. That's football and that's competition."
