Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli faces more than a month out after suffering a hamstring injury during his side’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday.
Arsenal are already without striker Gabriel Jesus for the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury, while winger Bukayo Saka is not expected to return from his hamstring problem until mid-March at the earliest.
The club were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign a new forward in January and only have Kai Havertz as a recognised striker.
Martinelli, who has travelled with the rest of the Arsenal squad to their warm-weather training camp in Dubai, could potentially miss crucial Premier League fixtures against Leicester City, West Ham and Nottingham Forest in February.
The 23-year-old would also be a doubt for games against Manchester United and Chelsea - both live on Sky Sports - the following month, as well as Arsenal's Champions League last-16 tie due to be held at the start of March.
Martinelli was replaced by Ethan Nwaneri in the 37th minute at St James' Park after holding the back of his thigh.
Arsenal are second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool who have a game in hand.
The Gunners flew out to Dubai on Thursday with Mikel Arteta and his staff overseeing their first training session on Friday.
Saka and Martinelli travelled with the group but were not pictured in training although Ben White was involved on his return from knee surgery.

they had a whole month to bring in a forward, but this will be good opportunity for Sterling or youngsters to step up 👍🏾

The biggest problem is obviously the fact that it leaves us with very little on the bench if we need to change a game or badly need a goal. I feel a bit like a broken record when it comes to Raheem Sterling, but he just doesn’t look like someone who can contribute at this level any more. If you could pick one player to come back from Dubai feeling invigorated and like their old self, it would be him, but that’s really, really long shot. Beyond that, I know some young players have gone out – Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Ismeal Kabia are the two attackers who have featured a bit this season – but how ready the manager thinks they are is another thing. I guess, in the absence of anyone else, you probably have to gamble a bit on one of them at the expense of a left-back when you’re picking your squad. Unless there’s something in Arteta’s mind about moving pieces around in a way we don’t expect. Is there, perhaps, a way to shift Myles Lewis-Skelly further forward knowing you can use Riccardo Calafiori at left-back? I know it doesn’t do much for the front three, but beyond sticking a big lad up top – Rice, Merino – in desperation, I don’t know what else there is. Kieran Tierney as a left-winger? Carlos Vela is out of contract, bring him home to chip us to the title.

I expect Mikel Arteta to go into the Academy and pick good strikers who are in the mould of Ethan Nwaneri and Skelly-Lewis. This is the time for him to show he is a good coach
