Cody Gakpo has revealed the length of time it took him to agree a new Liverpool contract amid interest from Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window.

Gakpo, 26, signed a new contract with Liverpool on Saturday to bring to an end any immediate speculation over his future at Anfield.

The Dutch forward had been linked Bayern after the Bundesliga giants missed out on Florian Wirtz - who instead opted to join Gakpo on Merseyside.

That saw Bayern turn their attention to Nico Williams, but he ended up rejecting advances from both Vincent Kompany's side and Barcelona by opting to stay at Athletic Club.

Now, Gakpo, has revealed how long agreeing new terms took as he spoke while on international duty with the Netherlands.

Speaking to ESPN via the Liverpool Echo, Gakpo said: 'I think it took us a year. Maybe a little longer or shorter, but it's just a long process.

'From what I understand, they (Bayern) have come, but in the end they have bought Luis Diaz.

'It's nice. Of course, I have experienced it differently myself. Such a transfer window can be hectic and stressful for a player and everyone around him. That doesn't bother me anymore.

'It's difficult, because a lot is happening. Other clubs come to you, but you may want to keep your own club.

'Everyone deals with it in their own way, but it is certainly difficult. If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story.'

After signing his new contract with the Reds, Gakpo told Liverpool's official club website: 'It feels amazing to extend the contract here at this beautiful club. I'm very grateful and hopefully I can give back many more beautiful moments.

'I feel at home, my family feels at home and that's also a big decision always. They feel good.

'I'm very happy at the club, a good group, good teammates, so the life around the football itself is very good and I enjoy every moment of it. I'm very grateful that I can extend.'

'Obviously trying to win more things with the club [is my aim], with the team.

'I think we have a very good squad at the moment and we're trying to build on something special again. Obviously last season we won the league, so we have to defend it with the best of our capabilities. We want to also win the Champions League and the other cups, so that's what we are going for.'
