Recently, Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Marco Pasotto discussed Modric's current situation at Milan.
Pasotto wrote in La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Modric did not suddenly age in June. He arrived at the World Cup with a cheekbone injury that cost him weeks of preparation with Milan and forced him to wear a protective mask, though he no longer needs it. His underwhelming performance against England certainly has an explanation, but the question is whether Modric is willing to accept it himself. He has a lot on his mind because he didn't expect to feel uncertain about his future in mid-June. Everything seemed settled: playing in the Champions League with his beloved Milan, with Allegri as the coach."
Pasotto continued: "But all of that is gone, and more. Because beyond the coaching change, the entire management was overhauled, and Modric lost his point of reference for understanding the situation. When he joined the Croatian national team training camp, he didn't know who to contact to clarify things, despite having spoken with Ibrahimovic once or twice. Many, including his compatriot Davor Suker, believe he is headed toward retirement from playing and a management role at Real Madrid. That's certainly possible, but no final decision has been made. Who knows if the next call on Luka's phone will come directly from Cardinale."
