Gazzetta: Inter Won Serie A Title Twice After Own-Goal Victories at Verona

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Internazionale twice won away matches against Hellas Verona with the help of own goals in consecutive seasons, ultimately winning the Serie A title both times.

In November 2025, Internazionale defeated Hellas Verona away with an own goal from Martin Frese in stoppage time and went on to win the Serie A title at the end of the season.

While merely a coincidence, it is worth noting given the context of the entire campaign. Almost a year earlier, on November 2, Internazionale had also visited Hellas Verona at the Bentegodi Stadium in an afternoon match.

Based on the league standings at that time, the match proved tougher than anticipated. After Zielinski scored a brilliant goal, Giovane equalized for Hellas Verona. Cristian Chivu's Inter eventually won thanks to an own goal from Martin Frese in stoppage time, securing a hard-fought and unconvincing victory.

History repeated itself. Yesterday evening, also in Veneto, Internazionale experienced a similar encounter. The team did not play well, but ultimately claimed all three points late in the match—this time with not one but two own goals.

The hosts repeatedly gifted own goals, when their actual performance deserved a better outcome. Superstitious Inter fans might have extra reason for celebration with these hard-earned three points, as the team will ultimately secure its 21st Serie A title. For Venezia, there is little cause for optimism: Hellas Verona was relegated to Serie B last season, and the current standings make it difficult for the Lagoon team to believe the outcome will be different this time.
