Taty Castellanos put four past Real Madrid to hand Girona a huge victory over the European champions and move Barcelona a step closer to their first Spanish title since 2019.
Match Report
The on-loan Argentine striker from New York City FC is a friend of Barca this season, missing a golden chance at Camp Nou and then denting the slim hopes of Madrid in La Liga with an astonishing “poker”.
Two in each half did the trick for Girona, against a Madrid without Thibaut Courtois and Karim Benzema among others.
Former Madrid defender Miguel Gutierrez crossed for the opener, nodded home by Castellanos — who showed another City group striker, Erling Haaland, the way.
Castellanos punished Militao for poor positioning and drilled home the second through the legs of Lunin.
Vinicius Junior headed one back for Madrid, but early in the second half the 24-year-old Castellanos struck again, this time a cool finish from Couto’s cross.
Another one after an hour, headed home after escaping Militao, saw Castellanos become the first striker to hit four against Madrid since Robert Lewandowski did in 2013.
Barcelona are one step closer to their first title since 2019. They can move 14 points clear at the top if they beat Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.
