In an interview with Die Zeit, Leon Goretzka stated that a series of actions by US President Donald Trump have made him deeply feel that “I'm not just German, but European.”
Goretzka is currently pushing hard to earn a place in Germany’s squad for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Die Zeit, he admitted: “I certainly follow the current political debate, but at the same time I’m still very hopeful that this World Cup will be a fantastic tournament. It will not only help grow football in the host countries, but also show how many people are eagerly looking forward to highly competitive matches.”
Recently, Trump has not only threatened to take control of Greenland by force, but also publicly accused Europe of being “weak” and “in decline.” Commenting on Trump’s remarks, Goretzka said: “Trump makes us feel not just German, but European.” The Bayern Munich midfield mainstay is convinced that European football will prove its quality on the World Cup stage this June and July.
“In the world’s most important football competition, European football still leads all other continents. Europe is far from falling behind, and it will certainly show the world its heritage on the pitch.”
As a matter of fact, Trump publicly attacked Europe as early as last December, saying: “If things continue on the current path, Europe’s future will not be… in my opinion… many European countries will no longer be viable nations. Their immigration policies are unquestionably a disaster.”
In January this year, Trump made even more shocking remarks, threatening to annex Greenland. However, at the World Economic Forum in Davos just last week, he softened his stance and said he would not use military force. “All the United States wants is Greenland. You can say yes, and we’ll be tremendously grateful; you can say no, and we’ll remember it just the same.”
Goretzka has previously spoken out publicly on social issues including racism, diversity and the climate crisis. Yet in recent years, he has become increasingly cautious when making public statements.
“As an athlete, speaking out publicly carries risks. You have to win matches on the pitch. Otherwise, the things you’ve said will be turned against you, deliberately misinterpreted and taken out of context,” he explained.
In this year’s World Cup group stage, Germany will face Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador in succession. Notably, Goretzka has earned a recall to the German national team, after being left out of head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for Euro 2024, which was held on home soil.
Recalling that experience, Goretzka admitted: “Communication and discussions with the head coach are essential, and they form the basis for our continued cooperation going forward. It goes without saying how much it hurt to miss out on Euro 2024.”
Meanwhile, his career is facing a new crossroads. With only six months remaining on his contract with Bayern Munich, and having never played outside Germany since turning professional, he is now seriously considering the possibility of playing abroad.
“It would be exciting to go and play in a foreign league during my career. I’m very comfortable in Munich, but sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone is part of personal growth. Being exposed to new things will enrich my life.”
Asked about potential destinations, Goretzka suggested that the Premier League could be a good fit. “A lot of people think my style of play suits England really well. I’ll listen to all offers and weigh them carefully. I’m looking forward to the conversations.”

You can't use football for political gains trump is wrong, taking Vanazuela, Greenland, the artic and increasing tarriffs in oder for us clear their debts and become powerful it's been not fair. US shouldn't have hosted a world cup therefore boycotting is a good idea.Promote free trade, Support sovereignty and democracy for each country. What belongs to Vanazuela and Greenland let them belong to them just like any other countries they deserve to control their own things. I used to think that US is good and nice place, now watching a beautiful world cup in us won't be nice and right.

Football and politics never blends and will never do, don't mix football with politics.
