Graham Potter signs four-year contract extension as Sweden manager

Graham Potter has signed a four-year contract extension as Sweden head coach, keeping him in post until 2030 despite the Englishman failing to record a win during his time in charge.

The former Chelsea boss was appointed on a short-term basis last October weeks after being sacked by West Ham, with the Swedish FA saying at the time that his contract was tied to Sweden's World Cup qualification.

Potter has overseen just two games in charge, with neither resulting in victory. His first, against Switzerland, ended in a heavy 4-1 defeat, and a 1-1 draw with Slovenia followed.

Now three weeks before Sweden are set to play Ukraine in their first play-off match for the World Cup, Potter has been handed a new lengthy contract.

'I am incredibly happy about the continued collaboration with Graham Potter, who is a solid person whose leadership I appreciate and have strong faith in,' said Niclas Carlnen, Swedish FA's secretary general.

'The long-term perspective gives players and managers peace of mind and the opportunity to create continuity in their activities with a view to future championships.

'Our national teams are of great importance to Swedish football and to many people around the country. Now we look forward to the coming years, but first and foremost, hopefully a World Cup summer.'

Potter's side face Ukraine in a one-match play-off in two weeks' time, before the winner faces Poland or Albania for a place at this summer's World Cup.

Sweden, who finished bottom of their World Cup qualifying group, were allowed to move into the play-offs due to their Nations League results.

'It is an incredibly proud day for me, a very happy day', said Potter. 'It's a fantastic opportunity to do something really important. It doesn't change anything in the short-term, because we want to win two matches to go to the World Cup.

'After that, it's nice to have the opportunity to work with everybody in Swedish football to create something really special.'

Potter was sacked by West Ham at the end of September after a disappointing start to the season.

Five losses in six games in the 2025-26 campaign had left the Hammers in the Premier League bottom three. Overall, he won just six of 23 matches since joining the east London club in January.

But Potter retained a positive image in Sweden after he delivered three promotions in four seasons in charge of Ostersund, taking them from the fourth tier to the top flight.

The 50-year-old followed this up with successful spells at Brighton and Swansea City before two disastrous spells with Chelsea and then West Ham.
