Mason Greenwood believes he could save the strained marriage of his parents by returning to Manchester United, according to a new claim.
When Greenwood joined Getafe on loan last year, his dad and agent Andrew went with him to Spain, while his mother Melanie remained in Bowdon, Cheshire, where the star lives in England.
The distance has reportedly put strain on the marriage, and whilst there have been strong rumours that Greenwood would remain in Spain, possibly with Barcelona, there have been counter-claims it could impact on his family life.
The Sun report that Greenwood thinks a return to the Premier League club could be a key part of making their relationship strong again.
A source told the website: 'Mason has been very happy in Spain and knows a lot of top clubs including Barcelona are interested in him.
'He was annoyed with United about how they handled the situation following his charges, so has always been reluctant to return.
'But his mum and dad have spent long periods apart since Mason moved to Spain, and everyone knows long-distance relationships can be hard, especially given the pressures they were under ever since Mason was first arrested in January 2022.
'It's been a very difficult two years for the Greenwood family.
'He thinks a lot of their problems could be solved if he went back to United. He's very close to his parents, so it's one of the reasons why a move back home could happen.'
Getafe CF have been approached for comment by MailOnline.
Andrew has set up a base in Spain to help his son during his loan spell at Getafe, with Greenwood living in Madrid with his partner Harriet and their daughter Summer.
After attempted rape and assault charges against him were dropped in February 2023, Getafe offered a lifeline to Greenwood in September when it became clear that bosses at Old Trafford thought his future lay elsewhere.
After his partial takeover of Man United was confirmed, Sir Jim Ratcliffe seemed to suggest that the club could bring him back, with the 22-year-old contracted until 2025.
However, it led to claims that Greenwood has no desire to return to Manchester United, as he felt the club failed to support him in the right fashion.
Getafe want to discuss keeping Greenwood, either by signing him permanently, or taking him on loan once again.
Greenwood has scored seven goals in 25 league games for Getafe, who next host Las Palmas on Saturday evening.
