Harvey Elliott left Liverpool earlier this month to join Aston Villa, but the midfielder has shown his support for the Premier League champions

Harvey Elliott has shown his support for Liverpool more than two weeks after leaving the club to join Aston Villa.

Elliott completed a move to Villa Park on transfer deadline day on a loan deal, which includes an obligation to buy next summer. The 22-year-old made his Premier League debut for his new club as a substitute in a goalless draw with Everton last weekend.

Unai Emery handed Elliott his first start at Villa in the Carabao Cup against Brentford on Tuesday night, where the former Anfield hero was also on the score sheet. Around 24 hours later, Elliott showed he still holds Liverpool close to his heart.

Liverpool faced Atletico Madrid at home in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Elliott taking to social media to show his support for his former club. Posting on his Instagram story, the midfielder shared an image of his dog with a TV in the background showing Liverpool taking on Atletico Madrid.

If Elliott watched the full game, he would have seen Virgil van Dijk score the winning goal for Liverpool in stoppage time in a 3-2 victory at Anfield. First-half strikes from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah had put the Reds 2-0 ahead against Atletico, before the Reds saw their lead wiped out after a Marcos Llorente brace.

After completing a move to Villa, Elliott previously explained why he chose to leave Liverpool despite having a close connection to the club.

"I mean for me, I loved every minute of it; every second, every day,” Elliott told reporters. “I wouldn’t change it to be honest, I learned so much from being there and experienced many things.

"The love I have for Liverpool is still going to be there forever, that’s not going to change, I’m still going to be watching and looking out for them from afar.

"I’m wishing them all the very best. But sometimes in football you need to be selfish. I made the decision to leave because I wanted to do what’s best for me.

"I take all of my experiences and everything I learnt from Liverpool. Hopefully I can start to kick on now."
