Hjulmand: We did so much right, we just can't score goals

Kasper Hjulmand was once again left to bemoan Bayer Leverkusen's finishing after his side drew with nine-man Bayern Munich.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern saw Nicolas Jackson and Luis Diaz sent off in Saturday's contest at BayArena.

Jackson was sent off for a nasty lunge on Martin Terrier, while Diaz, who equalised for Bayern midway through the second half, cancelling out Aleix Garcia's early opener, saw red late on after picking up a second yellow card.

Referee Christian Dingert believed Diaz had dived in the Leverkusen box, though after full-time, the official admitted he got the decision wrong, with Bayern left furious.

Leverkusen could not make their numerical advantage count, though. They had 21 shots, with 18 of those coming in the second half, and finished with 3.2 expected goals to Bayern's 1.3.

Jonas Hofmann saw a goal disallowed, though Bayern also had two chalked off. For Hjulmand, it was a similar story of frustration in front of goal.

"We played well man-for-man and didn't concede much," Hjulmand said.

"We even scored the winning goal before it was ruled a few centimetres offside. I think, as a coach, I must say we performed well.

"We defended well and played with passion and power. We kept our structure and played a good game.

"We also played well against Arsenal [in a 1-1 draw in the Champions League].

"We did so much right. We just can't score the goals. So it goes in football.

"For me, structure is the most important thing. That's the top priority. Get that right, and then you can play with passion, power, and personality."

The draw leaves Leverkusen in sixth in the Bundesliga, with Opta's supercomputer handing them a 43.1% chance of finishing in the top four.

Leverkusen's focus will now turn to the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Arsenal.
