Real Madrid have been crowned Spanish champions for the 36th time in their history, after their win over Cádiz was followed by defeat for Barcelona at Girona.

Real Madrid, who have been crowned 2023/24 LaLiga champions, will not receive a direct financial prize for winning the Spanish title. However, Los Blancos’ 36th domestic championship success will indirectly serve to boost their bank balance, by increasing the club’s share of the league’s TV money.

Under LaLiga’s current system for distributing the money it charges broadcasters to show the top flight of men’s soccer in Spain, a quarter of this income is shared with first-division clubs depending on where they finish in the table.

How much more TV money do LaLiga winners get?

The season’s champions get 17% of the money that LaLiga sets aside to pay to teams depending on their performance, with the runners-up receiving 15% and the third-placed side due 13%.

According to information that LaLiga has released on its TV earnings in 2022/23 - the first of the league’s current TV contract - teams in Primera División shared just over €313 million ($337m) in performance-related TV income.

This leads to a €53.3 million payout for the LaLiga champions - but they don’t get it all at once. Payment is spread out across five seasons, with the title winner initially receiving €18.6 million.

Madrid clinch title with Cádiz win, Barça defeat

Madrid set themselves up to secure this season’s LaLiga title by beating Cádiz earlier today, before Barça’s defeat to Girona confirmed Carlo Ancelotti’s side as league winners for the third time in the past five years.

After goals by Brahim Díaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu Mato had given Madrid a 3-0 victory at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Portu grabbed a brace for Girona as Barça went down 4-2 at Montilivi.
