Eddie Howe was left "hugely disappointed" by Newcastle United's defeat to Manchester United, despite a "dominant" second-half performance at Old Trafford.
The Magpies' winless streak in the Premier League extended to three matches, as Patrick Dorgu's first-half volley condemned them to a 1-0 loss.
Newcastle enjoyed two-thirds of the possession and registered 16 shots, with Lewis Hall hitting the crossbar from distance, but could not convert their late pressure into an equalising goal.
Howe's side have now won just one of their last 12 Premier League away games (D4 L7), collecting just seven points during that span – only bottom side Wolves (four) have recorded less.
"The second half was a lot better than the first, but we didn't do enough. We had to do more," the Newcastle boss told Sky Sports.
"It wasn't through a lack of effort, I thought we were very dominant in that second period. It was just the goal that was missing. I felt, if we scored, we could go on and win the game, but it didn't happen. We're hugely disappointed.
"I thought we started the game really well for the first 15 or 20 minutes, but I think we were slightly rocked by the goal. I don't think we responded well to that moment.
"I was a bit disappointed at half-time with our inability to grab control of the game. I thought it was there for us to take.
"I don't think there was a tactical problem for us at any stage of the game. We're disappointed with our actions in terms of trying to score and that final finish.
"We put a lot of balls in their box. The chances were there. If we'd scored that equalising goal, that whole momentum shift would have been with us. But it wasn't to be."
Anthony Gordon saw two decent opportunities go begging for Newcastle; dragging a shot narrowly wide from close range, while firing over following a neat move later on.
The England winger has failed to score a Premier League away goal since the 2-1 win over Tottenham on January 4, but Howe was quick to defend him.
"I thought he was probably our brightest player in attack," the Magpies head coach added of Gordon. "I thought he played well. He was direct, full of running.
"I was pleased with his individual performance. Yes, the goal wasn't there, but we need more goalmouth creation and action, and to be more clinical."

New Castle are an average team, undeserving to be amongst the elite of Europe. Bruno, tonali, Watermade even Gordon not good enough.
You can't be serious!? I know you want to defend your team and players but let's keep it real, just the tables alone speaks for NCFC. You are not good enough. Gykores and Trossard has done more for Arsenal than Watermade and Gordon for NCFC playing less games. If you really feel your players are better maybe Eddie Howe needs to go and find a better manager to bring out the best in your players so you are not lingering in the bottom half of the tables. COYG!

You should not be disappointed alone, you have proven to be a disgrace to all football lovers,u couldn't score or take a point against a united club that has been shambolic this season not to talk about the amount of injury united had, they almost lost all their top most important players to injury and duty call, yet u chose why u are called a castle without a proper leader,u don't play like an elite team u played like a low level football team,no wonder u are inconsistent in ur performances, just stick to that cup you guys won after so many years, that is only cup u can win, base on ur level,u can't win any important cup with the way ur performances are,and ur mentality is far from a team that is ready to compete. If united had gotten their important players up to the chance u guys had yesterday,i know they would have posses more damage to you. the only place u have injuries are the defence part, the rest of the position are well balance with fit players. You guys are below average "Newcastle United".

After UTD scored, the players tried to protect the lead because they know they will concede if they continue to play open

Newcastle were just unlucky today! They were superb in the second half and pressed hard but were unfortunate to not score. No need to be disillusioned!

Newcastle is inconsistent. They don't deserve to play in UCL.

In the end a goal was needed and it didn't come. ManUtd scored a lone goal and got a nice three points.

True,they played better
Thank you, but as you are aware who plays better does not count in the standings. The better team is the team that wins the game. Simple as that.

We can take the lead and give it up easily, but if we fall behind there is no way back. This is unacceptable. Eddie has to go.
