Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen were the first non US sports team on Google’s list of the most searched teams in 2024.
Inter Miami closed out the 2024 season full of ups and downs, with the Fort Lauderdale based team ultimately falling short of its main objective as they failed to progress in their quest for a MLS Cup win.
However, the Herons did secure the Supporters' Shield title with a record number of points with the win securing a berth at the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup next summer.
Messi’s presence with the team mixed with degrees of uncertainty over his fitness helped drive further interest and popularity of Inter Miami, not only in the United States, but internationally as the MLS were the most searched for soccer team on Google for the year, and third in the overall ranking.
MLB leads Google searches
In a Top 10 that curiously fails to see an entry from an NFL team, it was the two MLB ‘big guns’ that were the most searched sports teams of the year as the Yankees and Dodgers both played out the 2024 World Series with the LA side ultimately winning out.
Google shared the 2024 search trends with the NY Yankees topping the list followed by the Dodgers.
Fourth place went to Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen with Xabi Alonso’s ‘Die Werkself’ finally breaking Bayern’s stranglehold on the German league title as their run to the title captivated fans across the planet.
Messi features again with Argentina
Messi’s popularity and Argentina’s Copa América also saw the Albiceleste feature in the top 10.
NBA champions, Boston Celtics were the highest ranked basketball team after the TD Garden based side secured their 18th championship last summer with a win over Dallas Mavericks in the final. The Texans appear at number seven in the ranking.
