Jamaica Edge New Caledonia to Keep World Cup Dream Alive

Jamaica have taken a crucial step toward a return to the FIFA World Cup after edging past New Caledonia 1-0 in their inter-confederation playoff semi-final in Guadalajara.

The narrow victory keeps the Reggae Boyz firmly in contention for a place at the global tournament, as they now prepare for a decisive showdown against DR Congo on Tuesday.

A win in that encounter will secure their place in Group K of the World Cup scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19 in North America, where Colombia, Portugal and Uzbekistan await.

Jamaica’s only appearance at the World Cup came in 1998, and the team is now just one match away from ending that long absence.

The decisive moment came early in the contest when Bailey Cadamarteri struck in the 18th minute.

The forward reacted quickest after a free kick from Ronaldo Webster was parried by New Caledonia goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine, calmly finishing from close range.

Despite the early setback, New Caledonia—ranked 150th in the world and largely made up of part-time players—proved resilient and competitive throughout the encounter.

The Oceania side, who missed out on automatic qualification after losing to New Zealand, pushed Jamaica hard and nearly found an equaliser early in the second half.

Georges Gope-Fenepej came close but failed to connect with a dangerous cross in front of goal.

Nyikeine also delivered a standout performance between the posts, producing a vital intervention to deny Webster during a threatening run into the penalty area, keeping his side within reach.

Jamaica captain and goalkeeper Andre Blake acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents, praising both teams after the match.
