Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has apologized on social media for his "clumsy" comments about Aston Villa and its fans.

Aston Villa have accepted Carragher's apology and will not pursue legal action against him. Executive chairman Nassef Sawiris had said that Carragher's recent remarks showed disrespect to the club and its supporters. Late on Friday night, Villa issued a statement on social media, signed by Sawiris, saying the club would take legal action against Carragher.

The club objected to Carragher's comments in a recent episode of the "Stick to Football" podcast. He discussed Aston Villa's position in the football hierarchy and suggested that the club and its fans were powerless to stop Emery from potentially leaving for Manchester United.

"He (Emery) would definitely want the chance to manage a big club again," said Carragher. "There's a hierarchy in football whether you like it or not.

"So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best players, they'll take (Cristiano Ronaldo). There are very few teams above Manchester United, and the same goes for Liverpool.

"But there will be teams above Aston Villa, and they will take their manager, or take their players, so Aston Villa fans shut the **** up. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."

On Saturday afternoon, Carragher posted an apology on social media: "I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, their owners and all their supporters. My choice of words were clumsy and wrong this week.

"I can assure Villa fans that it was said in jest, but I understand that it wasn't perceived that way, so apologies to you."

Just after 10 PM on Friday, Villa had released a statement on social media signed by Sawiris, threatening legal action: "Aston Villa will be taking legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable and insulting comments about the club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to hinder our rise in English and European football."

Reports indicate that Villa have withdrawn the threat of legal action following Carragher's public apology.

However, it is understood that Sawiris will not tolerate any further insulting or disrespectful comments about the club in the future.
