Jamie Carragher can't resist response to Mo Salah blast

Jamie Carragher has attempted to smooth things over with Mo Salah after the Liverpool star accused him of becoming 'obsessed' with him.

Salah, 32, posted a cryptic image on social media after scoring his 21st goal of the season against Manchester United on Sunday. The photo contained three Liverpool players: himself, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

All three are out of contract at the end of this season, but the trio have behaved differently over the past few weeks. Salah firstly revealed in November that Liverpool hadn't offered him a new contract and has since gone on record to say that a new deal is still 'far away'.

Meanwhile, Carragher believes that Alexander-Arnold's camp had given Real Madrid the nod to make a bid on New Year's Eve, despite being able to sign him to a pre-contract 24 hours later. As for Van Dijk, Carragher has described him 'statesman-like' and suggested that Salah and Alexander-Arnold should behave more like their team-mate.

Salah responded to Carragher's claim by posting on X, formerly Twitter: "I'm starting to think you're obsessed with me," and added a winking emoji.

Carragher responded while he was in the Sky Sports Monday Night Football studio covering high-flying Nottingham Forest's trip to Wolves, posting on social media: "I've always been obsessed with you. Hopefully that obsession will continue next season."

The ex-Reds defender then said after Forest's 3-0 win on Sky Sports: "I mean, I have got a Mo Salah obsession. But I don't think it's the type of obsession he thinks it is. It's more of a footballing obsession and watching him in a red shirt.

"I come in, I answered as diplomatically as I possibly can. I think, 'I'm not gonna criticise Mo Salah or Trent Alexander-Arnold, I'm gonna rave about Virgil van Dijk' and I get myself in all sorts of trouble. That tweet does give me a bit of confidence he's going to sign this deal with Liverpool. He's giving the wink."

Carragher had told Sky Sports earlier on Monday when asked about Salah's post on social media: "You know what I would say? I would say Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation this season, as the captain of the club, in a higher esteem," Carragher began.

"The way he's conducted himself, his performances on the pitch, the way he's led the team, the way he was yesterday as well, and he hasn't got involved in too much around this.

"It's obviously a really important time for all three players, we know that, but I think rather than speak about Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah, I'd probably like to pay tribute to Virgil van Dijk. I think he's come across as a real statesman with the way he's handled it.

"He's been asked questions, he's knocked it away, he's here to win the league, he wants to do his utmost for Liverpool, and fingers crossed he signs. I think the other two could maybe look at Virgil van Dijk and take a leaf out of his book."
