According to CD Tenerife's official statement, Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has passed away at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish Segunda División match on Monday. The game was stopped with two minutes remaining, and Owono may face a severe sanction of between four and 12 matches.
The disciplinary outcome for FC Andorra's goalkeeper is now awaited. According to the referee's report, Owono was shown a red card for "raising his leg and violently striking an opponent with excessive force while challenging for the ball. The player received treatment on the field and was subsequently stretchered off."
It remains to be seen what ruling the Disciplinary Committee will make, as a foul in a challenge for the ball usually results in a one-match ban. According to Article 130 of the Disciplinary Code: "Acting violently during the match or as a direct consequence of a challenge in the match, as long as the action creates a risk but does not cause harmful or injurious consequences, will be punished with a suspension of one to three matches or up to one month."
However, because of the harmful consequences, Article 102 of the same code on acts of violence against an opponent may apply: "Acts of violence against an opponent during the match that cause harmful or injurious consequences deemed serious due to their nature or the potential absence they may cause, and that do not constitute a more serious offense, will be punished with a suspension of four to twelve matches."
Therefore, according to the literal wording of the rules, the disciplinary body may impose a suspension of at least four matches on Owono. Furthermore, given the serious consequences of the incident, an intermediate sanction of eight matches could be applied.
