Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has been honoured with a statue at his boyhood club Aalesund.

Riise, who started his career with Aalesund before returning for a second spell in 2016, was present at the unveiling and described it on Instagram as a humbling experience.

The former Norway international is best remembered for his spell at Liverpool, for whom he played between 2001 and 2008, winning the Champions League, the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Riise, who was known for his venomous shots from distance, also had spells with Monaco, Roma and Fulham during his career.

In addition, he was capped by his country on 110 occasions - more than any other player.

The 37-year-old, who was also deployed as a winger at times, last played for Indian side Chennaiyin FC before retiring.

This week Riise offered his opinion on the current Liverpool team and expressed his belief that Jurgen Klopp will bring silverware to Anfield.

Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool since October 2015 but has yet to win any trophies with the club.

As reported by Sky Sports, Riise said: '[Klopp] will win trophies, I am sure of it. As soon as you start winning trophies there is no way back and he is just going to keep going and going.

'The style of play now is amazing and they are doing well in the Champions League.

'Hopefully next season they can get a better start in the Premier League so they can fight from the beginning.'

Riise will hope that Liverpool will be able to overcome Manchester City when the sides meet at Anfield on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Liverpool won 4-3 against City in the Premier League clash between the two sides in January, ending the visitors' unbeaten top flight run in the process.
