Jorginho shows N'Golo Kante how to play Sarri-ball during Chelsea's friendly with Lyon

N'Golo Kante was quick to learn how  Chelsea's style of play has changed under new boss Maurizio Sarri when he made his return to action against Lyon on Tuesday night.

The World Cup-winning midfielder only trained with his Chelsea team-mates once prior to Tuesday's friendly after being granted permission to have a three-week extended break for his exploits in Russia.

Having spent the summer away from Chelsea's pre-season preparations, new boy Jorginho was on hand to bring Kante up to speed.

The midfielder was brought on as a second-half sub at Stamford Bridge for his first appearance back and immediately received a lesson on how to play Sarri-ball.

Under predecessor Antonio Conte, Chelsea were more pragmatic, but Sarri has been working hard to improve the attacking aspect of their game during pre-season and has challenged his players to be more versatile.

Kante's role last term was to sit in front of the back shielding the defence and breaking up play, but Sarri is keen for the Frenchman to push forward and join the attack at times this season.

Jorginho, who played under Sarri at Napoli and moved to Chelsea in a £57million deal earlier this summer, was more than happy to show Kante the ropes and was spotted urging his team-mate to make a run in behind Lyon's defence.

He then collected the ball himself and threaded the ball through the eye of a needle to put Kante through on goal, but the keeper came rushing out to block his effort.

It was Chelsea's best chance of the evening and Sarri would have been delighted to to see his new midfield general and last season's player of the year showing signs of synergy so quickly.

Ultimately, Chelsea were unable to break down a stubborn Lyon side, but did collect a penalty shootout victory in their final game before the new season thanks to summer recruit Rob Green's heroics in goal.
