Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was left gobsmacked as he watched from the stands while his team-mates raced into a 3-0 lead against Manchester City in the Champions League

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham was left stunned after witnessing team-mate Federico Valverde net an extraordinary hat-trick in Wednesday night's Champions League encounter against Manchester City. Despite the absence of Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Eder Militao, Madrid were in blistering form against City.

Alvaro Arbeloa's side raced into a three-goal advantage inside 42 minutes. Valverde latched onto Thibaut Courtois' long ball to give the Spanish giants the lead after just 20 minutes, before adding his second seven minutes later.

As the half-time interval approached, the midfielder completed his hattrick with a spectacular strike. Brahim Diaz's clever looped ball inside the box found Valverde, who flicked the ball over Ruben Dias and then Marc Guehi before firing past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

During the half-time break, TNT Sports showed Bellingham viewing the goal on a screen from the stands and being left open-mouthed.

He appeared to watch the goal twice on the screen inside the Santiago Bernabeu before bowing to his team-mate.

Matters nearly deteriorated further for Pep Guardiola's side after Donnarumma brought Vinicius Junior down inside the area. However, the Italian goalkeeper denied the Brazilian from the spot.

Bellingham was absent from the clash with a hamstring injury, and Los Blancos are hopeful the England international can return for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium next week.

The 22-year-old has received specialist diagnosis on the injury in London, accompanied by Madrid staff with Alvaro Arbeloa giving an update on Bellingham and Mbappe earlier this week.

He said: "Yes, I speak to him [Mbappe] every day. We're keeping a close eye on what's happening to him, how he's doing.

"It's a process we'll take day by day, monitoring how he's feeling. He's getting better every day. All these decisions are overseen by the club's doctors.

"Mbappe is in Paris with Real Madrid employees, Bellingham is in London with Real Madrid professionals. Everything, absolutely everything, is supervised."

Real Madrid may not need to rush Bellingham back for the second leg given their impressive first leg advantage from the Bernabeu.
