Kai Havertz has admitted that he was shocked when it was announced that Chelsea had sold Jorginho back in January.

He told The Guardian that he was extremely close with the 31-year-old, and only found out he was leaving the club after the Italy international called him that night.

The Italy international had established himself as a regular in midfield at Stamford Bridge, with that situation not changing this season.

However, he was offering no indication that he was set to commit his future to the Blues when his contract came to an end this summer.

With the potential being there that they could lose both Jorginho and N'golo Kante for free, the club decided it would be best for them to sell one in January to bring in some funds.

The decision seemed to catch a lot of people off guard, none more so than Havertz, who was left stunned at the speed things move in football.

He said: “Then you have the club. As a player, you don't notice the ownership change so much but we have a new team, new manager, new staff. A completely new changing room, so many personalities. You have to adapt, build a relationship.

“I played with Jorginho for two and a half years, he changed next to me, I loved being with him and then he calls me one evening and says: 'I'm gone.' I was like: 'What the? How is this possible?' This is how quick things change. It's a human thing. You just have to accept it, it's football.”

The Blues were able to replace Jorginho with World Cup winning Enzo Fernandez, albeit for a club-record fee.

The 22-year-old has hit the ground running though, already showing skills the Blues simply didn't have with any midfielders before he joined.
