Kane taking England future 'year by year' after World Cup exit

Harry Kane believes it is too early to think about whether this will be his last World Cup as he takes his England career "year by year."

England's hopes of ending their 60-year wait for the trophy came to an end on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.

There are just two occasions of a team scoring first in a semi-final but not reaching the final of the World Cup in the 21st century – both of them are England (versus Croatia in 2018 and Argentina in 2026).

Kane did not manage a single touch in the opposition box against Argentina, only the third time he has failed to do so in a major tournament game (Euro 2016 v Russia, Euro 2020 final v Italy).

During the loss, Kane made his 121st appearance in all competitions for England, the outright most of any outfield player for the Three Lions.

The Bayern Munich striker will be 36 when the 2030 World Cup comes around, but he has not ruled out playing on football's grandest stage one final time.

"Again, it's too early to talk about that," Kane said. "I'm taking it year by year and the national team is my pride and joy.

"It's what I love to do most, more than anything. Obviously, four years is a long way away.

"I'm 33 this summer but it never ended with Leo [Messi] there, he's still performing at the highest level.

"I never want to put a limit on these things.

"I'll address situations as they come, but for now it's just about processing a tough loss."

Kane has six goals at the World Cup, the joint-most of any England player in a single edition (also Gary Lineker in 1986, Kane in 2018 and Jude Bellingham in 2026).

England have one more game to go in the tournament, as they face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
