Of the few positives Pumas can boast about in this Apertura 2025, signing Keylor Navas undoubtedly tops the list. Welcomed with open arms and celebrated as the legend he is, the Auriazul club can at least claim to have made the standout signing of the tournament – between the posts, at least. His experience has been crucial in several games, his leadership invaluable in keeping the team’s playoff hopes alive.
His presence radiates security, even as his future remains uncertain. Given his age, other teams will surely come calling – or perhaps a well-earned retirement isn’t too far off. Still, when asked about his plans, Navas gave Pumas fans the answer they most wanted to hear: he intends to stay until the club no longer wants him.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Pumas’ Week 17 clash with Cruz Azul, the captain made it clear he feels right at home at Universidad Nacional. With seven months remaining on his contract, he said he hopes his future remains tied to the club even beyond that period.
“The people have treated me so well. It’s such a family-oriented club – my teammates have been incredible,” Navas said. “From day one, they opened the locker room to me, shared their friendship, and helped me understand the club’s history so I could feel part of it. That made me feel like I’ve been here for years, and I’m really happy, always eager to work.”
“As for how long I’ll be here… only God knows. I’m very happy at Pumas, and I’ll stay as long as the club wants me here. The day they no longer do, I’ll walk out the same tunnel I came through – calm, but with a happy heart, knowing I always gave my best and enjoyed every moment.”
With those words, the Costa Rican keeper gave Pumas fans reason for optimism. His openness to extending his stay offers a ray of hope for a club that desperately needs stability, results, and market appeal. For Pumas, renewing Navas’ contract feels less like an option – and more like a must.
