Gregor Kobel has been BVB's number one for almost four years now. The keeper joined Borussia from Stuttgart in the summer of 2021, has since made 161 appearances for the Black and Yellows and still has a valid contract in Dortmund until 2028.
In recent months, the keeper has also been linked with the Premier League from time to time. Newcastle United and Chelsea FC were explicitly discussed as possible next destinations for Kobel.
Tendency is towards Kobel's stay
"Yes, it's true that these clubs are interested," said Sky reporter Patrick Berger in the Sky BVB podcast "Auffe Süd". According to Sky information, however, there have not yet been any more concrete approaches that go beyond initial talks with the consultant. Kobel's agent Philipp Degen is no stranger to Dortmund; once played together with Kehl in a BVB shirt. It is customary for Degen to have already held a few talks with interested clubs.
"We can't confirm at the moment that Chelsea is serious or that anything is hot," said Berger, especially since the Blues currently have eight keepers under contract. Together with Süle, Kobel is the absolute top earner at BVB and rakes in a salary of more than ten million euros. Also because clubs that could offer the goalkeeper more money and a greater sporting perspective than BVB are few and far between, the BVB reporter believes that "there are many indications that Kobel will stay in Dortmund beyond the summer".
European competition as a factor?
However, a decisive factor for Kobel's stay could also be the final position in the Bundesliga and the associated qualification for the European competitions. "If Dortmund don't finish fourth, but only fifth or sixth, you have to consider transfers that bring you money. You need euros and then it might be interesting if you have one or the other club that is interested in bringing in money," said Sky BVB reporter Jesco von Eichmann on "Auffe Süd".
