Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has firmly played down speculation surrounding the possible international retirement of teammate Sadio Mané, insisting the talismanic forward remains vital to the national team’s future.
Reports had suggested that Mané could be considering stepping away from international football, sparking concern among fans and within the Senegalese camp. However, Koulibaly has moved swiftly to dismiss the notion, making it clear that the team has no intention of letting their star forward bow out prematurely.
“The international retirement of Sadio Mané? That’s not true. I won’t let him do it, and I hope he doesn’t,” Koulibaly said, underlining both his authority as captain and his admiration for his teammate.
The Al-Hilal defender emphasized Mané’s continued importance not only on the pitch but also as a symbol of Senegalese football on the global stage. “We still need him—for Senegal’s image and for his talent. He’s capable of giving us a few more years,” he added.
Koulibaly also pointed to the forward’s attacking role as a reason why age should not yet be a limiting factor. “He’s not a defender, after all—he can still give us some goals,” he remarked, suggesting that Mané’s offensive instincts and experience remain invaluable assets.
While uncertainty lingers over whether Mané’s comments were made in moment of emotion or with genuine intent, Koulibaly made it clear that the squad will rally around their star man. “Maybe he spoke in the heat of the moment. Or maybe he was serious. But we’re not going to let him get away with it like that,” he concluded.
Mané, widely regarded as one of Senegal’s greatest-ever players, has been instrumental in the nation’s recent successes, including their historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph. His potential departure would mark the end of an era—but if Koulibaly has his way, that moment is not coming anytime soon.
