Kylian Mbappe has accused PSG of owing him £47million in unpaid wages, with his lawyers now reporting the Ligue 1 giants to UEFA in the hopes of seeing them banned from the Champions League
Kylian Mbappe's lawyers have reported Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA as the row over £47million in unpaid wages rumbles on. The Ligue 1 giants could be at risk of being banned from the Champions League next season if they are found liable to pay Mbappe and subsequently refuse.
The row stems from a claim from Mbappe that he is owed £47m for the final three months of his salary and the last third of a loyalty bonus. The attacker spent seven years at PSG, winning six Ligue 1 titles and becoming a global superstar.
While he would otherwise be considered a club legend, given he is their all-time record goalscorer, the relationship between PSG and their former star is acrimonious. PSG chiefs were left unhappy with the manner in which Mbappe left the club.
The 26-year-old joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer, having revealed last May that he would not be remaining in the French capital. Following that announcement, Mbappe accused PSG of with-holding his salary and bonus payments.
Last October, the French league (LFP) appeals commission upheld a decision ordering PSG to pay Mbappe the unpaid wages he wants. So far, the Ligue 1 champions have refused to pay, with Mbappe's lawyers now reporting them to UEFA in the hope that the threat of exclusion from the Champions League forces the club to relent.
"This case is simple; it involves an employee who has completed his employment contract to its end and whose employer refuses to pay him. Over the past year, we haven't just been waiting for payment to arrive," Mbappe's lead lawyer Delphine Verheyden told BFMTV.
"Two courts have been seized to determine whether these sums were indeed due. Twice, they have condemned the club unequivocally, stating that these sums were unambiguously due. Our problem is that the player still hasn't received his payments.
"The club is loudly proclaiming that it will not carry out these decisions. We are dealing with a club that is not respecting an employment contract, not respecting decisions that are binding on it.
"So there is no other solution than to go to the next level, that is, seize these sums as a precautionary measure and inform UEFA. UEFA is currently reviewing applications for next season. The criteria that clubs must meet to obtain this license include not having any arrears in payments to their employees, including players. It was our duty to inform UEFA of this."
UEFA have insisted they will wait for a final decision before taking any action. A spokesperson said: “The case is only indirectly linked with us in terms of possible arrears of payment. If a final decision is taken by the French authorities and confirms that there are indeed arrears … the club would then have to pay the arrears on time or risk noncompliance with financial fair play.”
PSG have argued that when Mbappe was sidelined before the 2023/2024 season there was a verbal agreement with him opting to relinquish bonuses in order to return to the team. And the club have hit out at Mbappe for his continued claims.
A statement read: “After hearing yet another fantastic story from a parallel universe today, PSG continues to fail to understand why Kylian Mbappe is not taking his case to the labour chamber, which is the only court competent to settle the dispute between him and his former club."
Mbappe’s lawyers have said they will submit their case before the labour chamber. The France captain's legal team added they will also start an action against PSG for harassment because of the way he was treated.
