An inspired performance from substitute Michael Olise helped Bayern Munich overcome a stern test of their unbeaten Bundesliga record this season, as they came from behind to thrash RB Leipzig 5-1 and stretch their lead at the top of the table to 11 points.
Match Report
With a formidable record away from home in the league this season (W7, D1), Bayern were immediately under pressure here and could count themselves lucky not to have been behind early when Yan Diomande’s cutback was directed wide from close range by Antonio Nusa at the back post. Lennart Karl had the visitors’ first major chance as he raced onto a Harry Kane through ball, but he lacked the pace to shake off his marker, and in a moment of indecision, he failed to either test Péter Gulácsi or pick out Luis Díaz for a tap-in at the far post.
That proved to be a pivotal moment of the first half, with the home side taking control and going ahead minutes later. A slick move down the left ended with David Raum picking out Rômulo Cardoso with a low cross, and the Brazilian striker got in front of his man and beat Manuel Neuer for his second goal in as many games in 2026. Nusa had a clear opportunity to double Leipzig’s lead midway through the half, but he lacked composure at the vital moment and fired over the bar from just inside the area. The hosts had created several big chances before the break, and managed to keep Bayern at bay to take their lead into HT, with the visitors unable to create many clear-cut opportunities.
Leipzig’s wastefulness was ultimately punished within five minutes of the restart, as a lapse in concentration from Christoph Baumgartner allowed Dayot Upamecano to regain possession, and his ball ran through for Serge Gnabry to clinically stroke the ball past Gulácsi and restore parity. Ole Werner’s men kept their heads up and almost regained the lead on 64 minutes, but Neuer showed his class to tip a thunderbolt from Rômulo over the bar.
That save looked especially important when Bayern demonstrated again why they’re the Bundesliga’s runaway leaders, with top scorer Harry Kane seizing on a critical error from Ridle Baku at the back post as he failed to clear Olise’s cross, pouncing with a pinpoint finish to complete the turnaround and notch his fourth H2H goal of the season. Another sharp save from Neuer to deny Diomande followed soon afterwards and preserved Bayern’s advantage, which was added to three times before the final whistle thanks to Olise’s wizardry.
First, the Frenchman’s corner was headed home by Jonathan Tah, before he laid on a fourth goal as he ran down the right before putting it on a plate for Aleksandar Pavlović to tap home into the empty net. Olise curled home Bayern’s fifth to round off the scoring, completing an ultimately miserable night for Leipzig that means they have now failed to win any of their last 10 home games against Bayern, leaving them in fourth and only inside the UEFA Champions League places on goal difference.
