Leonardo drops a bold take on PSG's decision to sign Ramos

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has claimed that the verdict is still early on Sergio Ramos’ run at the Ligue 1 powerhouse.

Leonardo took some time to speak to L’Equipe about the club’s decision to sign the veteran Spanish defender, where he noted that a fair assessment of the signing should be handed out at the end of the season.

“We signed him and he was physically fit,” Leonardo said. “Unfortunately, what we imagined didn’t happen. It is difficult for him, for everyone. But our reports are clear. The day we say he can no longer play, everyone will be clear. This is not the case. After that, not playing makes it difficult for him to be a leader.

“We will wait before drawing conclusions, the season is not over. But I am not afraid to take responsibility for mistakes when I make them.”

Leonardo has garnered much outside criticism for his decision to haul in Ramos via a free transfer deal. The Spanish international faced multiple injury issues in his final season at Real Madrid, and this has carried over into his first season at PSG. He has so far featured in a mere five matches in all competitions this season, as injuries have sidelined him from some of the club’s biggest matches of the campaign.

Ramos is currently out of action due to a calf injury, but as Leonardo alluded to, the defender still has plenty of time to redeem himself this season.
