Lewandowski calls for Muller to play after Bayern's poor performance vs Berlin

The Polish striker explained the cause of Bayern’s offensive problems in the game.

In an interview with Bild, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski spoke about the team’s offense (or lack thereof) against Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The striker asked for more support up front, claiming that it was the reason that he could not create many chances. He hopes that Thomas Muller, who has not started four consecutive games for Bayern, would get a chance soon.

Here’s what Lewandowski said:

We need more support up front. Sure, you also sometimes have to think about winning. We also have to get a clean sheet in the next game. But we were not creative enough in the middle against Hertha. That’s why it wasn’t easy for me to create chances. We have to improve that.

I hope that Thomas gets a chance again soon. And that he can show that he can help the team. He always makes runs forward, introduces a lot of movement.

The game against Hertha was especially difficult for Lewandowski, as he always found himself marked closely by at least two defenders. This is where the presence of Thomas Muller could have helped, as the German is a master of creating space for his teammates. In fact, since Muller began his spell on the bench, Lewandowski has managed just one goal and one assist — both against Schalke two weeks ago.

This isn’t anything new for the Polish striker — he has long maintained that he plays better when Thomas Muller is on the pitch. Recently Muller has found minutes hard to come by, as Niko Kovac elected to use James Rodriguez over him in preparation for Liverpool.

Hopefully, the coach will now heed his striker’s advice, and give the raumdeuter more of a role going forward. Up next in the Bundesliga is Gladbach, and foals will surely punish another poor attacking performance.
