According to Polish outlet Meczyki, Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski will decide on his future as early as April, having already received a lucrative offer from Chicago Fire.
Lewandowski’s contract with Barcelona expires this summer, and under regulations he is now eligible to sign with a new club. Despite widespread speculation, he is in no rush to make a decision. On deadline day across Europe’s top five leagues, Sky Sports Germany reporter Kerry Hau reported that Lewandowski recently turned down a lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabia.
Lewandowski decided long ago to see out his contract with Barcelona. While Saudi Arabia remains a potential destination, having courted him consistently in recent years, he is also pushing for a contract extension at Camp Nou. Though he has been a rotational player this season, he continues to score decisive goals in key moments and against top opposition, as he did in the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid.
One thing is certain: talks between Lewandowski and Barcelona will not progress for the time being. The club’s presidential election is scheduled for March 15, and only after that will the two sides be able to sit down and discuss their future together. Lewandowski’s camp can hold negotiations with Joan Laporta at present, but any agreement reached could be rendered void if he fails to win re-election.
The situation is therefore likely to accelerate after March 15, to be followed by another pivotal period: the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs, which will directly shape the future of Lewandowski’s international career with Poland.
At that stage, Lewandowski will assess the terms offered by Barcelona. Should the two parties fail to reach an agreement, he will naturally consider alternative options, including a move to the United States – hosts of the next World Cup. Last December, representatives from Chicago Fire travelled to Spain to meet with Lewandowski and present him with a lucrative contract proposal. It was far from a casual visit: the club prepared a detailed project, with all its backroom staff involved in the process. Chicago Fire hold priority signing rights for Lewandowski, though other MLS clubs could yet enter the race.
Other European sides are also monitoring a potential move for the Polish striker. However, Polish media understand that Barcelona remain the only realistic European suitor; the chances of him joining another European club are slim.
Patience is still required, with April and May set to be decisive months. Lewandowski aims to finalise his future before the end of the season in order to plan his family life accordingly. For now, his top priorities are to win trophies with Barcelona and help Poland secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
