Are Ligue 1 clubs sleepwalking into a colossal financial crisis? According to a report from L’Equipe, the latest domestic TV rights tender debacle, with the Ligue de Football Professionnel selling the rights to DAZN and beIN Sports for only €500m, will have immediate consequences for the French top-tier outfits. Compared to last season, Ligue 1 clubs will see their TV revenues drop by around 60% on average. In summary, Ligue 1 clubs are bracing for austerity whilst French consumers are facing the prospect of paying more than they ever have – 45€ per month – to watch Ligue 1 in a lose-lose scenario.

LFP president Vincent Labrune hoped for a €900m+ windfall for the league’s TV rights and even drew out an ambitious plan to break the €1bn barrier, taking into account international rights. In the end, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs will only be allocated €228m with costs skyrocketing from €156m last year to €272m.

In practical terms and as of today, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain can only hope to receive €22m in TV money should they win a fourth Ligue 1 win. Last year, they banked €60m in broadcasting money. According to RMC Sport, the season-opening Ligue 1 gameweek won’t be broadcast in England, Spain and Italy with the LFP locked in talks to find broadcasters.
