Lionel Messi makes more MLS history by claiming this impressive new record

Lionel Messi just keeps rewriting the record books. Despite doubts about whether he’d play on Saturday, the Argentine star suited up for Inter Miami’s home game against Atlanta United, and delivered a dazzling performance.

Messi not only wanted to be on the field for longtime friend Jordi Alba’s farewell but also used the occasion to make more MLS history. With two goals at Chase Stadium, the World Cup winner from Qatar 2022 recorded his ninth multi-goal match of the season, setting a new league record.

That performance moves him past the previous mark shared by Columbus Crew’s John Stern (1998), Tampa Bay’s Mamadou Diallo (2000), and LA Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2019).

Messi masterclass in Miami

Messi had been left out of Argentina’s roster for its friendly against Venezuela, which conveniently took place in Miami. That gave him the chance to stay with his club and deliver a show for fans, and for his national teammates watching from the stands.

From start to finish, Messi dictated the tempo, scoring twice and creating several more chances as Inter Miami cruised past Atlanta.

Chasing first MLS Golden Boot

Beyond Alba’s farewell, Messi had another goal in mind: the MLS Golden Boot race. His brace on Saturday pushed him two goals clear of LAFC forward Denis Bouanga in the scoring charts.

LAFC still has two regular-season games remaining, but Bouanga will miss one while on international duty with Gabon as they attempt to qualify for the World Cup.

Inter Miami will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Nashville, while LAFC visits Colorado. Bouanga will need at least a double to catch Messi, and he’ll be hoping the Argentine doesn’t find the net again next weekend.
