The Argentina manager was confident that Messi has a lot left in his legs, despite being in his mid-30s.
Despite the fact that Lionel Messi has been forced off the pitch on multiple occasions over recent months and it is not known whether or not he will make it to the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, the Albiceleste, who recently recorded a massive win against Brazil, are hopeful that the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner will indeed be able to play his part in the showpiece event.
Regarding this very topic, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni assured that he sees Messi as capable of extending his career and arriving at the 2026 tournament in fine form and physical shape.
‘On the pitch with the ball is where Messi’s happy’
“We say to Messi to play all that he can in the time he has. He has shown that he has no end. You don’t know when he’ll retire. It’s incredible. He’s happy on a football pitch and away from that I think it’s tough to be Leo because he leaves home and is surrounded by people. On the pitch with the ball is where he’s happy”, explained Scaloni in an interview with Christian Vieri through the ex-Italy player’s Twitch channel.
This is how Scaloni encouraged Messi to carry on playing and not stop in the short term after the Inter Miami player had put his Argentina future in doubt after winning the Qatar World Cup 2022, highlighting that he saw the 2026 edition of the tournament as a tough ask.
Scaloni may continue as Argentina boss, despite comments
“I think he can carry on playing”, said Scaloni, “but the choice is his. He can player where he wants and the team will work for him.”
Doubts have surrounded Scaloni as the head coach of Argentina after his comments earlier in the month and despite the fear he was not going to be present at the Copa América draw, he did in fact make the trip to be there on Thursday as Argentina will find out their fate in the continental tournament, with tentative reports coming out that the World Cup winning manager will indeed lead the side at the competition next summer.

Skills, creativity, consistency, ability to control the game, ability to make something out of nothing, artistry etc are the things that win players individual awards. So I guess the end result of those attributes is individual trophies and that's why Messi has it than anybody else...
true 💯

An interesting thread I read - Why is Lionel Messi considered better than Cristiano Ronaldo by most of the legendary footballers? Because football is not a game of statistics. Sure, stats help to distinguish good players from the best players. Both Ronaldo and Messi have scoring statistics and trophy collections, which put them above most other players who have played the game. But once you have that very elite group of players on top (Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldo, Beckenbauer, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo etc.) stats and trophies are not the only criteria to determine who is THE best player. Skills, creativity, consistency, ability to control the game, ability to make something out of nothing, aristry - the very best player will possess these attributes more than the others. And this is where Messi stands out. He is a natural talent, a man without any physical attributes, which gives him an advantage, unlike Ronaldo. Messi is just a perfect technical player who makes extremely hard things look easy. It is his feet who do the talking. Not his jumps, or his height, or his muscles. His feet make things happen, always. Ronaldo is a great goalscorer, probably the best finisher the game has ever seen, something like a modern version of Pele. He doesn’t create so much for his teammates. He is there to finish what his teammates have prepared for him. He does that perfectly. But he can not create something out of nothing. He lacks creativity and patience to be the motor of the team. Messi does that perfectly. He creates goals for his teammates and for himself, along with scoring them. The only other player of such ability was Maradona. The thing that puts them slightly apart is Messi’s better scoring record. Maradona did score goals, but not so much. He came from a different era of football, and he probably got more respect because of playing in harder conditions in the 80′s, but he had a lot of ups and downs in his career. Messi never really had any downs. He’s been playing on the same level for more than a decade, really. When Messi retires, it will be an end of an era. The world may not be able to enjoy such a talent again. Ronaldo’s great, but excellent goalscorers always exist.
