Marcello Lippi insists “Italian football is not in crisis”, and says “it’s sad” that Michael Oliver sent off Gianluigi Buffon.
Italy have failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup, but the man who won the competition in 2006 doesn’t see the future as being bleak.
“The Azzurri had two spectacular years in the group with Spain,” Lippi told Premium Sport.
“Then they had 20 days of blackout and they lost to Sweden. That’s what happened, Italian football is not in crisis. We can face the future with confidence, because we have a lot of good youngsters.
“Italian teams are capable of anything, there isn’t this big negative difference. No-one thought Roma and Juventus could do what they did against Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“They showed that with a little luck they can be competitive.”
While the Giallorossi went through against Barça, Juve were eliminated by a last-minute penalty in the Bernabeu, having fought back from a 3-0 loss in the first leg…
“I’m not disputing the penalty, which you could give or not give. But a good referee forgot the rule of common sense in this case.
“It’s sad that he couldn’t understand Buffon’s emotional reaction in a situation like that.”

This is why Lippi lead Azzurri to a World Cup victory. He has perspective.

I understand in the heat of the moment him getting angry (btw,it was a definite red card) but for him to still talk negative about Oliver,is totally wrong

Buffon will always be the best goalkeeper for me, the 2006 world cup winner. It's just sad for him to depart like this.

Feel really sorry for Buffon for not having someone like Lippi or Trappattoni for him. Allegri is good, but his persistence is unbelievable.

Lippi's philosophy helped Azzurri win 2006 but he had peak Buffon/Pirlo etc and many more players... 2010 it is Lippi but old, over the hill players or injured stars

Just listened to Lippi, 70 years old, champion of everything and cold talking, said exactly what Buffon said yesterday. To me, to censor, is of the Piero.

I hear Lippi at JTV. Now they are no longer hiding was rigor. They admit it and then? The referee has wrong to expel Buffon. This is the new problem

For me when you win a World Cup you should feel satisfied, even Lippi made the mistake of continuing. Instead of Buffon I would have left after Euro 2012 or World 2014.

If he told him 10% of what he then said in the studio, the referee had a great time chasing him.
