A mistake from Gomez sees the ball travel straight back to Aguero after an initial clearance from Lovren. The defender catches the Argentine with his boot, but the referee does not point to the spot. Aguero gets up and attempts to fire at goal, only to see his effort deflected wide of the post by Lovren.

Milner is forced from the field as Keita, who suffered a back spasm earlier in the week, replaces him in the midfield

Aguero has space from 30 yards, and although he has support he goes for goal. Aguero blasts his effort well over the bar, much to the delight of the home fans.

City have space on the break as David Silva feeds Mahrez down the right flank. He tries to square up Lovren, but the Liverpool defender times his challenge to perfection on the slide.

85' PENALTY TO MANCHESTER CITY! 

Sane breaks through down the left inside channel and Van Dijk dives in with a late challenge. He fails to make contact with the ball, tripping the German in the process. The referee does not hesitate in pointing to the spot.

Mahrez spurns the opportunity to put City ahead. He didn't look confident taking the spot-kick and neither did his team-mates. Mahrez blasted the ball towards the net, leaning back which forced his strike to soar over the bar. What a moment that could be in the context of the title race.

A match billed as a clash between the two title favourites failed to live up to lofty expectations with both teams struggling to create clear chances at Anfield on Sunday.

But Mahrez should have won it for City with four minutes to go after Virgil van Dijk was penalised for bringing down Leroy Sane, instead blasting his spot-kick well over the crossbar.
